Crew And Watch Managers Supervisory Development Programme

Duration: Series of five one week modules

Who is this course for?
Newly appointed Crew or Watch Managers or those with no previous formal training. Individuals acting up or identified as having the potential to become Crew or Watch Managers.

Course Outline
This programme covers a number of ILM Level 3 units and supports the development of the knowledge and understanding and the skills required for relevant parts of the National Standards for the Role of Watch Manager.

The programme addresses units:

  • WM1 (Lead the work of teams and individuals)
  • WM2 (Maintain activities to meet requirements)
  • WM3 (Manage information for action)
  • WM4 (Take responsibility for effective performance)
  • WM5 (Support the development of teams and individuals)
  • WM9 (Support the efficient use of resources)
  • WM11 (Respond to poor performance in your team)
A key part of the programme is relating generic leadership and management principles to practice within the fire and rescue service. Regular one to one trainer feedback is provided for each individual to help them apply their learning back in the workplace.

Assessment/Qualifications

A number of work based assignments applying learning in the workplace leading to the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 3 Certificate in First Line Management.

Future Development

This course can be taken together with the Incident Management Procedures Course that supports WM7 (Lead and support people to resolve operational incidents). This can be found in the Continuing Professional Development Section.

Individuals can continue their development by undertaking the Crew/Watch Managers’ Development Programme or any of the specialist leadership and management courses offered.
